Man Utd news: Manchester United were SCARED of Manchester City - BBC pundit Alan Shearer
MANCHESTER UNITED were scared of Manchester City yesterday.
That’s the verdict of BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer in the wake of the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat to the Blues at Old Trafford.
United played host to City yesterday knowing a win would have closed the gap on the Premier League leaders to five points.
But they saw their title hopes all but ended thanks to David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi’s goals for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Shearer offered his take on United’s performance while appearing on Match of the Day 2 last night.
I felt as if United played with a fear
And it’s safe it say he was not impressed by Jose Mourinho’s team.
Asked on MOTD2 if the title race is over, Shearer said: "I think it is, yeah.
"I think it was a game that United had to win today to have a realistic chance of winning the title.
"But I thought there was a gulf in class today.
"I thought the way they kept hold of the ball, the way they closed Man United down, Manchester City when they lost the ball.

"I felt as if United played with a fear.
"It might have looked an attacking team with the players he [Mourinho] had in it but it was in no way attacking.
"Particularly in the first half, the number of times they resorted to long ball and no one within 30 or 40 yards of [Romelu] Lukaku.
"I thought there was a gulf in class."
United and City renew their rivalry when they meet at the Etihad on Saturday April 7.
