Truck mows down two sleeping on footpath

In yet another case of hit and run reported in the national Capital, two poor men who were sleeping on a footpath were killed after a speeding truck mowed them down. The truck was carrying grain towards Narela Mandi. The accident took place North Delhi’s Civil Lines area on

late Saturday night, police said on Sunday.

Police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death under Sections 279/304A and the accused driver has been detained by the staff of Civil Lines police station and is being questioned . The identity of the deceased persons is yet to be established.

According to a senior police officer, the incident took place at around I a.m. when a truck carrying grains from Bulandshahar district in Uttar Pradesh was heading towards Narela Sabzi Mandi.

At around 1am, the truck carrying trucks overturned after its left tyre burst near the Monastery. The truck fell down on the footpath near the Swami Narayan Mandi footpath. It appeared that the driver was not able to control the speed of the errant vehicle due to heavy weight of the grains.

Two men, in the 40s, came under the wheels of the truck and were crushed. Locals sleeping heard the loud noise of the truck and made a call to the Police Control Room (PCR). A police team rushed the badly injured footpath dwellers to the Sushruta Trauma Centre where they succumbed during treatment.

Till late Sunday evening, police said that they have not been able to establish the identity of the deceased persons as no identification documents could be found on their bodies.

On the other hand, the truck driver, Jaswant who fled from the spot after the accident, was caught by the police earlier on Sunday.

Police on Sunday said that they have kept the bodies of the two men for post mortem at a nearby mortuary. A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered at the Civil Lines police station.
