PATNA: Doctors on Sunday advised people not to apply hot compress and restrict further movement of the area in case of knee injury.
"One should only apply a cold pack to the area to soothe inflammation. In case of ligament injury in the knee, reconstruction should be carried out within six months of the injury as it can damage other structures of the knee, including meniscus and cartilage," said associate professor of orthopaedics at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) Dr Manish Kumar. He was addressing an arthroscopy conference organised by IGIMS's department of orthopaedics. The conference was attended by more than 170 orthopaedics, anaesthetists and physiotherapists from across the state, Kolkata and New Delhi.
Dr Kumar, who is the in charge of orthoscopy at the hospital, said an OPD for sports injury is conducted every Thursday and operations related to sports injury are carried out on every Friday. "An injury to the ligament of the knee is very common. We get nearly 4-5 patients every week and conduct one operation on an average every week at IGIMS," he said and added that young and active people are more susceptible to the injury.
According to the doctor, the sudden change in the direction of the body or a sudden twisting motion may result in such an injury. With ligament injury in the knee, one will experience pain and an imbalance in the knee joint. "Many people experience these symptoms with a weakness of the knee muscles or cartilage injury," said a doctor.
