A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an unidentified man when she stepped out of her house in Jamshedpur’s Chhota Govindpur locality to answer a call of nature on Sunday morning.

The girl was rushed to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital by family members after she complained of pain in her lower abdomen and private parts.

Sources said a toilet was under construction in the victim’s house.

Rajiv Ranjan, the officer-in-charge of the Govindpur police station, said police were to receive reports of the medical tests conducted on the girl. Nevertheless, a first information report has been lodged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

“The culprit is yet to be identified. We have lodged an FIR and initiated our investigation,” the officer said. Doctors stated that the girl sustained injuries, but is out of danger.

The girl’s relatives blamed the delay in constructing the indoor toilet for the incident. “Our daughter would have been safe today if the district administration had only completed the work on time,” the minor’s mother said.

Jamshedpur block development officer (BDO) Parul Singh said around 40 toilets were yet to be constructed in the Chhota Govindpur area. The process had to be halted after the forest department raised objections, she added.

According to sources, many houses in the area have been constructed on encroached forest land.
