Rajsamand killer's police custody extended by 10 days

Udaipur: A Rajsamand court on Sunday extended the police custody of Shambulal Raigar by 10 days. Raigar was arrested by the police on December 7 for brutally killing Afrazul, a labourer from West Bengal, burning his body and later releasing the videos of the heinous act on social media.

The accused has been kept at Rajnagar police station and would be interrogated thoroughly about the real motive behind the murder, police said.

The investigation team is tight-lipped and refuses to give any details of the interrogation so far. However, sources claim, Shambulal had changed his mobile numbers frequently in the recent past, reportedly because he was receiving threats from unknown people.

Sources also claim that Shambulal had no rivalry with Afrazul, and killed him by mistake. His target was someone else, but he mistook him for Afrazul and killed him, according to sources.

On Saturday, Rajsamand SDM Rajendra Prasad Agarwal gave a cheque of Rs 5 lakh as relief to the aggrieved family. Afrazul's son-in-law Musharraf Khan received the cheque that was issued in the name of Gulbahar, the victim's wife.

Meanwhile, the accused's relatives said Shambulal's parents, who live in Anand in Gujarat, have refused to come to Rajsamand after being informed of the incident. His father Ramlal had worked with a handicraft unit in Ahmedabad earlier, but moved to Anand and does petty jobs such as idol making for a living.

"The old parents are so shocked by the act that they do not want to come home. They get updates from the media and call their other sons to enquire about the family," claimed a close relative.

The medical board that conducted the post-mortem of Afrazul's body claimed that it was the most violent attack they have ever seen in their life.

"There were seven to eight injury marks on his back and head. One of the injuries was so severe that the brain was damaged and had bulged out," a doctor said on the condition of anonymity.

Box: Migrant labourers returning home

The brutal killing of Afrazul has badly shaken other workers from the area and many of them have already left for their homes in West Bengal.

According to sources, more than 150 labourers have left for their native places with their contractors. Most of the Bengali contractors, who undertake petty contruction, RCC and maintenance works, have their own team of 15-25 workers from their area. These workers share rented rooms in Dhoinda, which is situated some 20km from Rajnagar. They go to the construction site in the morning and return in the evening. Their living conditions are pathetic and they live in dingy one or two room quarters. Many of these quarters are nothing more than cow sheds converted into rooms by house owners. Hundreds of labourers from Bihar and Bengal are also said to be employed in mines in the surrounding areas, including Kelwa, Amet, etc.

Many of the rooms were seen locked in the locality after workers left for their homes. However, sources claim this is temporary and they would return once the situation becomes normal. Contractors have also cautioned their teams to stay alert and not to go around with unknown people.
