BHUBANESWAR: In a further proof of the abysmally poor conviction rate in Odisha, the State Government has admitted that not a single accused person in the 618 cases filed in the Mahila police station in the capital city during the last three years has been convicted.Informing this in the Assembly in a written reply to a question from Dilip Ray (BJP), Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said chargesheets were filed in 283 cases out of the 347 cases registered in the Mahila police station in 2015. However, no accused persons were convicted in these cases.
Similarly, out of the 192 cases filed in 2016 in the Mahila police station, chargesheets were submitted in 151 cases. However, not single accused person was convicted in these cases. A case was, however, proved to be false, he said. He said out of the 79 cases filed in Mahila police station in 2017 by November-end, chargesheets have been submitted in 38 cases. But, in not a single case the accused persons were convicted, he added.
The Chief Minister said, Mahila police stations have been opened in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Rourkela, Sambalpur and Jeypore. While in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, there are more staff than the sanctioned posts, there are vacancies in Berhampur and Rourkela.
