Yavatmal: The growing rift between the members of BJP and Shiv Sena, who are in power, might bring the Yavatmal Municipal Council to a grinding halt.
The municipality has 29 BJP councillors and are occupying all the subcommittee chairman's posts. The president's seat, which is elected directly from the voters, belongs to Shiv Sena's Kanchan Chaudhari. The president is facing resistance from the BJP councillors which brings hurdles in the day-to-day functioning of the council.
Chaudhari on Friday expressed her inability to carry out the functions of the municipality. "How can I accept the illegal activities being carried out with the connivance of the Chief Officer and the support of the Councillors?" she said.
Chaudhari alleged that the chairmen of BJP often boycotts the meetings or forces her to turn blind eye towards the illegal resolutions brought on agenda and adopted by the house. The ultimate sufferers are the taxpaying residents who are deprived of the basic civic amenities.
While citing umpteen cases of irregularities, she said, even today, old pending bills are signed by the chief officer Sudam Dupe who is retired from the service in May. She demanded a special audit in to the affairs of the Yavatmal municipality to bring the guilty to law.
"I have evidences of over Rs 5 crore irregularities committed by the ex-chief officer," she said.
When asked about the role of district guardian minister Madan Yerawar of BJP, Kanchan said, "He is pulling string from behind probably due to his apprehension of losing public opinion about him if the Municipality is developed fast under her presidentship."
When contacted, the former MC President Balasaheb Chaudhari said the state govt should issue an ordinance to dissolve the municipality that fail to ensure basic civic amenities and developmental works. "This can only be a practical solution to such a critical situation," he added.
