Four drown as car falls in Pollachi canal

One was rescued by a truck driver who saw the accident

Four youths from Angamaly drowned when the car they were travelling in fell into a canal at Gadimedu, near Pollachi, on Sunday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Amal Paul (20) of Ezhattumugham, Jithin (27) of Mukkanoor, Jackson (20) of Manickyamangalam, and Rijo (33) of Ayyampuzha. Alfa, who was also in the car, was rescued by a truck driver who was bathing in a nearby canal.

According to police, the five were on a pleasure trip and started from Angamaly on Saturday. They visited Munnar and Marayur and were returning via Pollachi when the accident occurred.

The accident occurred at 6.30 a.m. when the car hit the railing of the bridge across the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project canal near Gomangalam on the Pollachi-Udumalpettai route.
