BHUBANESWAR: Farmers in the state heaved a sigh of relief as the deep depression that had formed over the Bay of Bengal has started moving away. This has effected in lowering the intensity of rain in several districts while a few interior areas received moderate rainfall. But the rain has brought down the minimum temperature several notches below normal across the state.

"The deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal on Saturday weakened tand changed its directions towards West Bengal and Bangaldesh coast. Isolated places int he state may receive rainfall till Sinday due to the system, lying 120 km away from Paradip and 170 km from Gopalpur. Squally wind speed of 45 to 55kmph gusting to 65 kmph would very likely prevail along and off Odisha coasts during the next 24 hours," Sarat Chandra Sahu, the director of regional IMD centre, said.

The deep depression weakened to a depression over the sea and moved north-northeastwards with a speed of about 15 kmph in the last 6 hours, a bulletin issued from IMD said.

"It is very likely to maintain its intensity during 24 hours and weaken gradually into a well marked low during subsequent 12 hours," it added.

However, the unseasonal rainfall left many farmers worried in coastal pockets and caused damage to their harvested crops.

Revenue minister Maheswar Mohanty assured the farmers that the state government would consider taking necessary steps if it receives reports of crop damage. Jagatsinghpur district received major rainfall due to this system, he said.

Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted another bout of light rain, likely to occur in isolated places across Odisha on Wednesday and Thursday, triggered by a trough line.

"Sea condition would be rough to very rough along and off Odisha coasta during the period," the IMD bulleting said, adding that fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. The Met department's rainfall report recorded on Saturday morning said many places in coastal Odisha witnessed rainfall in past 24 hours. Kakatpur in Puri district recorded the highest of 120mm. Major rainfall recorded at the other places during this period include Gop (110mm), Paradeep, Puri and Astaranga (100mm each), Balikuda and Kujanga (90mm each). The capital city recorded 30mm rainfall.
