PATNA: Cases related to violation of human rights reaching the Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC) has been on the rise since its formation in 2008. The data available on the BHRC website shows that while just 102 cases were registered in 2008, the number increased to 6,542 in 2015.

At 11,133 cases between 2008 and 2015, the highest number of complaints was registered for violation of human rights. "While just 34 such cases were reported in 2008, the number jumped to 2,041 in 2015," said a source.

The highest increase, though, was seen in cases registered against the mafia and underworld, which rose by 188 times in 2015 when compared to 2008. While only four such cases were reported in 2008, the number went up to 753 cases in 2015.

In term of disposal of cases also, there has been a steep rise. While in 2008, just 49 cases were disposed of, the total disposal in 2015 stood at 7,658. Yet, more than 10,000 cases were pending with the BHRC till 2015, shows the website.

Deputy secretary of BHRC Devendra Kumar Sabita attributed the rise in number of cases to increasing awareness among masses about their rights. "The website has details till 2015. If we consider the number of cases registered for violation of human rights this year till November, it stands at 7,936," he said, adding the commission is concerned about increasing human rights violations in Bihar which is forcing people to lodge complaints in large numbers.
