Firefighters responded to a kitchen fire Saturday night after a man spilled burning oil in his Saskatoon home.

The Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of a cooking oil fire in a basement suite on 7th Avenue N. at about 9:30 p.m. CST.

Three pumpers, a ladder truck and a rescue truck were sent to deal with the fire.

When they got there, crews found a man who lived in the basement suite. He had carried the burning pot of oil outside and burned his hand in the process.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Firefighters entered the building and extinguished a small fire that started after the burning oil spilled out of the pot. Property damage is estimated at about $1,500.

There were no other residents in the suite.

Tips on avoiding grease fires

The Fire Department is reminding people to not overheat oil when cooking.

If a grease fire does erupt in your home, don't try to move the burning pot of oil or spray water on it — that will spread the flames.

Instead, you should shut the burner off and place a metal lid or cookie sheet on the pot while wearing an oven mitt to protect your hand.

Small grease fires can also be extinguished with baking soda.

If the fire appears out of control, exit the building and call 911.
