Man dies in clash over land dispute

A man was killed in a clash over a land dispute in Khetlal upazila of Joypurhat yesterday.

The victim was Wadud Ali, 40, son of Ashraf Ali of Tanshan village in the upazila.

His uncle Abdul Hamid was critically hurt in the clash and is under treatment at Kheltal Upazila Health Complex.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kheltal Police Station Abul Kalam Azad said there was a dispute over land between Yakub Ali and Wadud Ali.

When Yakub and his men went to the disputed land to plant mustard yesterday, Wadud and his relatives rushed there and tried to stop them. The two groups locked in an altercation. At one stage, Yakub allegedly hit Wadud on the head with a spade. He also hit Hamid when he came forward to rescue his nephew.

Locals rescued Wadud and Hamid and took them to the health complex. Later, doctors referred Wadud to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital as his condition was deteriorating. He succumbed to his injuries there an hour later.

Filing of a murder case was underway, the OC said.
