The Union College men's hockey team rallied from a two goal deficit to top visiting Holy Cross, 4-2, on Saturday in a non-league contest at Messa Rink in Schenectady.
Senior Ryan Scarfo scored his ninth goal of the year to snap a 2-2 deadlock with just two minutes, 12 seconds left in the third period to give the Dutchmen the come-from-behind win.
Union moved to 10-7-1 overall with the victory.
Holy Cross cruised out to a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first period. Spencer Trapp put the Crusaders up 1-0 only 1:54 into the first period with his eighth goal of the season and Scott Pooley extended the Holy Cross lead to 2-0 at the 18:58 mark of the opening frame with his 14th goal of the year.
Jack Adams finally put Union on the scoreboard 5:55 into the second period with a power play goal to cut the Crusaders advantage to one goal and make it 2-1. Cole Maier knotted the game up in the closing moments of the second, with just 24-seconds left in the period, with his fourth goal of the year for the Dutchmen.
The go-ahead goal was difficult for either team to find until Scarfo broke through at 17:44 of the final period to give Union a 3-2 lead. Ryan Walker sent home an empty-net goal at 18:45 to seal the victory for the Dutchmen.
Scarfo and Maier each finished with a goal and an assist and Vas Kolias chipped in with three assists to lead Union. The Dutchmen outshot Holy Cross, 40-21, including 26-11 in the opening two periods. Union hosts UMass on Sunday at 5 p.m.
