Tuesday [December 11] is the 1202nd anniversary of the first arrival of Parsis in India with a view to settlement in this land according to tradition current in that community. The celebration of this anniversary had long fallen into disuse, but last year there was a public celebration at Sanjan Port where Parsis are supposed to have originally landed in 715 A.D. Much enthusiasm was created and several thousand Parsis attended the ceremony so that Jashan Committee which organised the celebration resolved to mark the occasion in a similar manner in future years. Accordingly this year too there will be a commemoration ceremony at Sanjan in honour of the first Parsis who came to settle in India. But as the railways have curtailed facilities of travel and Government have expressed the desire that the public would avoid travelling as far as possible the committee have decided not to invite Parsis of Bombay to Jashan or religious ceremony at Sanjan which will therefore be a quiet affair attended by the people of the neighbourhood alone. Bombay Parsis are however not to go without commemoration altogether and for their convenience the historic anniversary will be celebrated in our city [Bombay] next Sunday, by Jashan ceremony before a larger gathering than will be assembled in Sanjan on the 11th instant.
