NEW DELHI: BJP president Amit Shah on Sunday termed the Congress "a creator of polarisation in India" and accused it of indulging in votebank politics.
Addressing the media in Gujarat's Gandhinagar, Shah blamed the Congress for making caste the main issue in the run up to the assembly elections in Gujarat.
The BJP leader also dismissed the demand made by Congress leader Charan Singh Sapra, where he had asked PM Narendra Modi to visit Delhi's Jama Masjid and apologies for the 2002 Gujarat riots.
"Congress' Charan Singh said PM Modi must go inside Jama Masjid and apologise for 2002 riots. Entire nation knows the allegations levelled on Modi Ji by Congress backed NGO were all false and he is spotless. Yet for vote bank consolidation 2002 is being raised in 2017", he defended.
Shah also targeted independent candidate Jignesh Mewani for accepting money from Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of the Popular Front of India (PFI).
"Jignesh Mewani's pictures of accepting money from PFI has gone viral. PFI has always indulged in anti-national activities. Rahul Gandhi meets such a person who has relations with an anti-national outfit & Congress gives up its seat for him for vote bank consolidation", he said.
PFI was under the National Investigation Agency scanner after reports emerged that its members were fighting for the so-called Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
Shah further alleged that owing to Mewani's links with PFI, the Congress has been reluctant to extend direct support to Mewani.
"Congress knew of his relations with PFI otherwise they would have given him a Congress ticket. They knew of the relations so they made him contest as an independent candidate and supported him from outside", he said.
He also questioned the selection of Congress politician Salman Nizami to campaign in the Gujarat election and termed it a tactic by Congress to consolidate the vote bank.
"Salman Nizami who has vowed for Kashmir's 'freedom', is being launched for campaigning in Gujarat and this is being leaked for the consolidation of vote bank. People of Gujarat can see through the cunning ways of Congress", he said.
Nizami was recently in the news after accusations surfaced that he had questioned the identity of PM Modi's family and supported the separatists in Jammu and Kashmir on social media.
