Cape Town - A seventh person has been arrested in a police crackdown on violence linked to the notorious Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.
The latest person to be arrested had given police the slip during a multi-pronged operation on Wednesday aimed at bringing in people fingered for ongoing violence at the hostel complex.
"We got information and managed to arrest him," said police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane.
He was found in the Highflats area around Ixopo.
On Friday five of the accused, police sergeant Bhekukwazi Mdweshu, 37, Vukani Mcobothi, 25, Khayelihle Mbuthuma, 32, Wonderboy Hlophe, 37, and Matlala Mdweshu Ntshangase, 35, appeared in the Umlazi Magistrates Court. They were remanded into custody until Monday to allow them to arrange for their defence.
The sixth accused, Doris Kati Odwa, 26, appeared separately on another case of attempted murder and was also remanded into custody until Monday.
The seventh has not been named yet, but is 29 years old and will be charged for two murders, attempted murder, and other cases.
At the time of the initial arrests, the acting provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Bheki Langa, thanked the detectives who worked on the operation, and residents for their support to the police.
"We want criminals to know that they will not enjoy a peaceful festive season as long they are on the run from police," he said.
