2017 Theme: Let’s stand up for equality, justice and human dignity

The Human Rights Day was observed across the world on 10 December 2017 with the theme 'Let’s stand up for equality, justice and human dignity'.

This year, the celebrations of the Day witnessed the launching of a year-long campaign '#Standup4humanrights' to mark the upcoming 70th anniversary of the 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights'.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a milestone document that proclaimed the rights which everyone is entitled to as a human being, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political opinion, national origin, property, birth or other status.

The Declaration sets out universal values and a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. It is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 500 languages.

Background
Human Rights Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. It commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The first Human Rights Day was celebrated in 1950.
