PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: After the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation slipped to the 72nd rank in the cleanliness ranking under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in May 2017, the civic body will be making a renewed effort for cleanliness in housing societies, localities, schools, markets and hotels from January 2018.

Although Pimpri Chinchwad was ranked ninth in the cleanliness ranking in 2016, there were only 75 cities with a population of over ten lakh in the country. In 2017, there were 500 cities and in 2018, there will be 4,041 cities.

In the cleanliness survey of 2018, the focus will be on garbage management (collection, transportation, processing and disposal), action against open defecation, education and information, behavioural change, capacity building and innovative projects. Citizens should increasingly use the Swachhata app and provide feedback to the municipal corporation.

Joint commissioner Dilip Gawde said that the cleanliness survey will start from January 4. "Pimpri Chinchwad should become the cleanest city. The municipal corporation would focus on solid waste management," Gawde added.

According to the director of Swachh Maharashtra Abhiyan, Uday Tekale, public awareness campaigns should be held in the city. Cleanliness competitions should be organized in housing societies and complaints regarding cleanliness should be tackled quickly, he said.

Teams from Quality Council of India will visit areas such as marketplaces, bus terminals and railway stations, besides meeting people and examining the city's sanitation plan prepared by PCMC.

Earlier, municipal commissioner Shravan Hardikar had said that if households could segregate wet and dry garbage, it will be easier for the municipal corporation to transport the waste to the processing units and then to the Moshi garbage depot. Citizens are, however, not segregating waste as there is little public awareness. Three years ago, PCMC had distributed two seven-litre waste buckets to over 4.5 lakh households.
