BATHINDA: Amidst protest by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) activists alleging that their candidates were not allowed to file nomination papers, all the 15 Congress nominees were elected unopposed to the Baghapurana municipal council in Moga district on Friday.
The lone SAD candidate Kamaljit Kaur, from ward number 11, withdrew her papers on Friday, leaving only 15 candidates in the fray. On Thursday, nomination papers of four candidates were rejected.
In all, 20 nominations were filed for 15 wards of Baghapurana MC till December 6. SAD Moga district (rural) unit chief Tirath Singh Mahla said, "Initially, authorities did not provide no objection certificates (NoCs) to our candidates on time. When our candidates went to file nominations, Congress workers snatched and tore up the papers. Only Kamaljit could file her nominations and she too withdrew in protest."
He said a party activist, Prem Dhand was injured on December 6 when Congress workers attacked Akali candidates. "This is tantamount to murder of democracy and we are protesting against that," said Mahla.
Congress MLA Darshan Singh Brar denied the charges and said Akali canddiates did not file nomination papers fearing loss. Baghapurana sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Amarbir Singh Sidhu said, "Only 15 candidates remained in the fray after withdrawals. They have been announced elected unopposed."
