CHANDIGARH: The stepmother arrested for beating a five-year-old girl used to thrash her over petty issues almost daily and ignored the pleas of the girl's brother not to mistreat her, the victim has said, heaving a sigh of relief that her 10-month-long ordeal has ended.

Jaspreet Kaur, the accused, was arrested on Thursday. "My 12-year-old bother used to beg her not to beat me, but she never listened. She also used to threaten him of dire consequences," the girl said. The brother had a number of times informed their father, Manmohan Singh, about the brutality of the stepmother, but he refused to believe him. He somehow managed to convince his father to buy him a mobile phone. He then secretly shot videos of Kaur slapping the girl and stuffing her in a gunny bag over a span of few months.

Talking to TOI, the boy said his father was speechless after he watched the videos and started crying. Taken aback by his second wife's brutality, Manmohan Singh approached Child Welfare committee (CWC) in the first week of November. It forwarded the case to the police.

Manmohan Singh, who had married Kaur in September last year, was filled with regret for not believing his son around 10 months back. "Had I trusted my son in the beginning, my daughter would not have to suffer the torture for so long," Manmohan said.

'Don't want her back in our life'

Both the children have given in writing to the UT Child Welfare Committee that they want to live with their father. "We don't want that woman back in our life," the girl said.
