German envoy hails diplomatic relations with Oman at 10th GUtech anniversary celebrations

Muscat -

The 10th anniversary of the German University of Technology (GUtech) in Oman was celebrated along with Oman-German Day recently.

The celebrations were held under the auspices of H E Thomas Schneider, Germany’s Ambassador to Oman at GUtech’s amphitheatre on Wednesday. “This is an occasion of joy and pride,” said H E Schneider hailing the diplomatic relations between the two countries which began in 1972.

GUtech is affiliated with RWTH Aachen University in Germany and was established in 2007 in Muscat.

“GUtech will always be a flagship for Oman and Germany’s relations,” said the ambassador in his speech. The ambassador stressed that German education is not a commodity and should be accessible and affordable for every student. German universities rank among the best in the world and are leading research institutions in many fields.

According to the vision of the German academic Alexander von Humboldt, universities should enable students to become independent thinkers. The day also saw distribution of scholarships to 19 international GUtech students by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). “The scholarship is encouraging me to work even harder in my studies. In future, I would like to study in Germany, maybe do my BSc thesis at a German university,” said Magda Mohammed, who is a second year student of BSc International Business and Service Management (IBSM).

The distribution of scholarships was followed by a classical music performance by German composers of the Royal Symphony Orchestra. The celebrations concluded with the screening of the first episode of the documentary film Sons of Sinbad which showcases the rich seafaring history of Oman. The second episode of the documentary was shown on Thursday. The third episode will be screened on Monday.
