Aadhaar enrolment to start at ward offices in 2 weeks

Pune: Municipal ward offices and government offices in the state will have Aadhaar enrolment and update facilities in a fortnight, Maharashtra principal secretary (information technology) SVR Srinivas said on Saturday.

Even as the deadline for linking Aadhaar to essential services has been extended till March-end, the Pune district will soon have private operators working from the premises of government offices, Srinivas said. "Roping in private operators will ease the operations in the Pune district," he added. There has not been much change to the problems plaguing the Aadhaar drive in the district. "We still have lesser number of government spaces to operate, skeletal staff and technical issues," he said, adding that discussions have been held with the Pune collector to sort these issues out.

At present, there are 196 centres in the district. As per the plan, additional 70 private operators will be roped in to operate from the government premises. Meanwhile, the Pune collector on Friday increased the Aadhaar update kits by 50 for the district.

"These kits can quicken the process of updating Aadhaar information, thereby, bringing down waiting time," assistant district nodal officer, Vikas Bhalerao said.

He said these kits are the ones that are usually operated by banks for verifying Aadhaar while opening new accounts. At present, the district has 196 centres, of which 84 are in the Pune Municipal Corporation area while 49 are operational in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal limits. As many as 63 kits are operational in the rural areas. With more centres, Srinivas said it would decrease the rush at these offices and help increase enrolment. Citizens who have been trying to update their Aadhaar information online find it difficult as the website after sending the OTP does not take on the details.

"Aadhaar officials should look into this issue which will help in updating the Aadhaar information online," Milind Sathre, a resident of Kothrud, said. Somnath Virji, another resident, said the government has acted late on improving the facilities.
