(MENAFN) President Trump was heavily criticized over his announcement this week of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the entire fifteen nations on the UN Security Council.

Following a council meeting set on Friday, the ambassadors of Britain, Germany, Italy, France and Sweden issued a joint statement that confirmed the action taken by President Trump was "not in line with Security Council resolutions and was unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region."

The New York Times reported that even though the US action is doubtfully to be formally denounced by the council as a body, the United States has veto authority over the council.
