JALANDHAR: Cases have been registered against Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal and other senior Shiromani Akali Dal leaders including former ministers and siting MLAs for blocking National Highway and other highways on Thursday and Friday. Police has also invoked section 8B of National Highway Act, a stringent, non-bailable provision, in these cases.

While Badal, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Khadoor Sahib MP Ranjit Singh Brahmpura and several others have been booked at Makhu Police Station in district Ferozepur, former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur, who is also a former minister and her associates have been booked at Dhilwan Police Station in district Kapurthala for the blocking the Beas bridge on Jalandhar-Amritsar National Highway for around six hours. Case has been registered under sections 283, 188, 341 and 149 of IPC and section 8B of NH Act for blocking the highway, wrongfully restraining people and violating official orders as prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC were already in place.

A separate case has been registered at Talwandi Chaudhrian police station in district Kapurthala against former minister Dr Upinderjit Kaur, former MLA R S Brahmpura and their associates for blocking bridge on river Beas near Goindwal Sahib. As Akalis blocked the bridges on river Beas this led to nearly complete disconnect between Doaba and Majha regions.

Former minister and now Shahkot MLA Ajit Singh Kohar, MLAs Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Pawan Teenu and Baldev Singh Khaira and other leaders and Akali workers were booked at Lohian Police station for blocking Gidarpindi bridge on river Satluj. This bridge connects districts Moga and Jalandhar. This bridge remained blocked for almost 24 hours as the dharna on it was started on Thursday evening and was lifted on Friday evening at around 6 PM. This case has been registered under sections 431, 283, 188, 341, 149 of IPC and section 8B of NH Act.

Akali leaders were protesting against alleged high handedness of Congress government in Punjab during Municipal polls. SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had started a blockade at Harike Pattan bridge on Thursday evening after which Akali leaders blocked the roads across the state on Friday which led to great inconvenience to people in the state and thousands of commuters were left stranded on the NH and other highways.
