BHUBANESWAR: With another direct international flight to Bangkok from Bhubaneswar starting on Sunday, the city airport authorities on Friday opened two foreign exchange counters at the international and domestic terminals. Though the first direct international flight from here had taken off on April 26, there was no foreign exchange counter then. It was an AirAsia flight with 157 passengers and the service was started with much fanfare.
In view of the second international flight to Thailand from Sunday, the foreign exchange counter was opened at both the terminals. "There will be currencies of all the South Asian countries for now. If we have more direct flights to other destinations, foreign exchange facility will be augmented accordingly," said airport director S C Hota.
Officials said currently around 4,000 passengers are booking tickets from here for Kuala Lumpur and nearly the same number of passengers are arriving here. "If booked to capacity, the passenger footfalls of both the flights (to and fro) will touch 10,000 mark," Hota added.
Two days ago, the airport authorities had provided space for opening of ultra-modern restaurants that can serve South Asian cuisine to cater to passengers from abroad.
Sources said with Bhubaneswar being the number one 'Smart City' in the country, huge investment is expected to be pumped into it for development. The 'Smart City' tag has also helped attract foreign investment, tourists, corporate officials and delegates to the city.
In 2018, two more international flights will start their operations from here. With business and tourism opportunities growing exponentially, international operators will find it feasible to operate their flights from here. "The scenario was different a year ago , though," said an airport officer.
