Vonn hurts back just weeks before Olympics

2017-12-09 14:54

St. Moritz -American skier Lindsey Vonn hurt her back in the World Cup Super-G at Saint-Moritz on Saturday, just two months before the Winter Olympics.

After she finished in Switzerland, 33-year-old Vonn lay down and then struggled to stand up again. Bent over, as if she had pain in the small of her back, Vonn then made her way into a tent reserved for competitors.

The US ski team tweeted that Vonn had "compressed her back" at the fifth gate.

"(She) skied through pain but didn't have power to push. She was evaluated by the physio and doctor in the tent," the team continued, promising more information later.

Switzerland's Jasmine Flury finished first with compatriot Michelle Gisin in second, one tenth of a second behind. Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was third. Vonn recorded the 17th best time.

Vonn is one of the most successful skiers in history and has made the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, her priority for the season. The Games begin on February 9.

Vonn said on Thursday she would refuse to go to the White House for a post-Winter Olympics reception, aligning herself with other athletes who have protested against President Donald Trump.
