Ghaziabad: Unidentified men broke into a locked house in Vijay Nagar's Sector 9 on the night of Thursday and escaped with cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 21 lakh.

The house owner, identified as Sandeep Yadav (35), a dairy owner, along with his family members had gone out to Tigri village in Gautam Budh Nagar to conduct last rites of his elder brother when the robbery took place.

Police suspect the role of insiders as a pistol worth several lakhs kept in one of the cupboards, was not touched.

Yadav is a nephew of BJP councillor Sant Ram Yadav.

"We came back from the funeral on Friday morning and found the lock on the main door of the house broken. The robbers escaped with jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh and Rs 6 lakh in cash," The entire house was ransacked, but only cash and jewellery were stolen. A licenced pistol was also kept alongside cash and jewellery, but robbers did not take it. Given the emergency scenario, we had not got time to lock cupboards," Yadav told TOI.

SHO, Vijay Nagar, Naresh Kumar Singh said, "An FIR has been filed and the matter is being investigated. A forensic team has been called to collect fingerprints. The accused, it seems, are known to the victim and we are working on the leads provided to us."
