CHENNAI: In an unusual move, the Returning Officer of Chennai's prestigious RK Nagar assembly seat has been shunted out by the Election Commission after a controversy around his decision to reject actor Vishal Krishna's nomination papers this week.
Within a matter of few hours on Wednesday, Mr Velusamy had first rejected Vishal's nomination papers, then agreed to accept the papers before reversing his decision again.
The official was later reported to have explained acceptance of Vishal's nomination papers to "undue pressure" from the actor and his supporters.
The officer's handling of this case had led the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, or DMK, to seek Mr Velusamy's transfer and question the credibility of the commission's machinery at the state level.
