It wasn’t abduction drama: Farhad Mazhar

DHAKA: Noted poet, writer and columnist Farhad Mazhar, who was earlier said to be abducted, rejected the claims of law enforcers regarding the smog created around the allegations of his disappearance.

Police has been demanding since rescuing him that the Mazhar fabricated the whole incident and he wasn’t abducted.

Farhad denied the allegation and said, “You could be assured that it wasn’t any dramatic incident.”

He arranged a press briefing at his residence in Shyamoli of Dhaka.

Regarding the deposition he filed with the court on the day next to his rescue was ‘scripted’ by the police, he alleged. He just delivered it before the court, only to avoid any further untoward happening, counter case or social humiliation.

However, earlier the court approved a case to be filed against Mazhar and his wife Farida Akter, a human rights activist; for harassing the law enforcers by filing a case upon false accusations of abduction.

However, Farhad Mazhar was reportedly abducted from his Shyamoli residence on early in the morning of July 3.

The law enforcers rescued him from a bus at Noapara of Jessore at around 11:30pm the same day, 18 hours since his abduction.

He gave a statement under Section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) before a magistrate in Dhaka immediately after he had been rescued.

Farida filed a General Diary (GD) with Adabar Police Station in connection with the incident which was later taken as a case.

She claimed that she was also asked to pay Tk35 lakh as ransom to get back her husband.
