Chandigarh: There were long queues at the three missionary schools on the last day of submission of admission forms. St John's High School, Carmel Convent School and Sacred Heart School have received more than 2,000 forms for 440 seats. School officials said the rush of parents on the last day of form submission this year exceeded the level recorded in previous years. "However, all went well. There were a large number of parents," said an official from Carmel Convent.

In St John's school, around 700 forms were received for 160 seats, whereas Sacred Heart and Carmel Convent school received around 1,000 forms in five days for 120 and 160 seats respectively. For parents, the odds are mounting. Over the last few years, schools have been filling seats in the preferred categories before opening the remaining seats for the draw of lots.

Last year, the four coveted missionary schools, St John's High School (all boys), Carmel Convent School (all girls) and Sacred Heart School (all girls) and St Anne's Convent School opened only 341 out of 640 seats for the draw of lots in the general category against thousands of forms. In St John's High School, nearly 521 applications were received for 160 seats in upper kindergarten but only 94 were left open for draw of lots. In Sacred Heart School, nearly 981 forms were received against 160 seats and only 97 were left open for the general public. In Carmel Convent, 820 forms were received against 120 seats, with only 50 seats offered in the general category and in St Anne's, 2,196 forms were received for 250 seats.

The three missionary schools had already stated that preference would be given to Christians, siblings, children of alumni, management and children of staff members. "Selection for free and open seats, if available, after allocation of other seats, will be made by draw of lots on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 3pm on the school premises," the missionary schools' circular said.

"We accepted forms till afternoon and have also registered forms from parents who initially had problems filling them. We have asked them to provide correct details by next week. We have been flexible as we don't want parents to suffer," an official from St John's school said.

With submission of forms, the first phase of admissions has come to an end. Schools will now scrutinise the forms and put up a list of eligible candidates before January 16.
