DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, who was the pioneer of empowerment of women in the subcontinent, is an inspiration to move country forward.
The premier was addressing a program marking the Begum Rokeya Day and distribution of Begum Rokeya Padak-2017 in the city's Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Saturday (December 9).
Sheikh Hasina further said that Begum Rokeya opened up the door for the women. Thanks to her vision, we have come forward. With Begum Rokeya’s inspiration, she is running her government.
Also, the Mother of Humanity said Awami League is making policies for the development of women. Her government announced maternity leave for 3 months when they came to power in 1996. Later, it was extended to 6 months in 2008.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the Begum Rokeya Award-2017 to five women.
This year award was given to-Freedom fighter Majeda Shawkat Ali, teacher Sobharni Tripura, Mahmuda Khatun Ratna of Grameen Bikash Sahitya Sangstha, Suraiya Begum and journalist (posthumous) Mahfuza Khatun (Baby Moudud).
