Margao: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said that the state government is presently working out a mechanism that would ensure that the grievances of the elderly are redressed.

Parrikar said that the senior citizens face financial difficulties as well as being ill-treated by their children with cases filed in the police stations. Although his personal view is that such domestic disputes ought to be resolved within the family, the government is seriously considering and is presently deliberating this issue of constituting a government department similar to the commission for persons with disabilities.

Parrikar made this remark to STOI after the conclusion of the 'Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana' function held at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao wherein the CM along with the Union minister for social justice and empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot, social welfare minister Pandurang Madkaikar and South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar distributed the assisted-living devices such as wheelchairs, walking sticks, spectacles, dentures, hearing aids, crutches, etc, to 1,407 senior citizens belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) category of the South Goa district.

The event was organised by the Union department of social justice and department of empowerment of persons with disabilities (Divyangjan); Goa state ministry of social justice and empowerment in association with the South Goa district administration facilitated by the artificial limbs manufacturing corporation of India (ALIMCO), Kanpur.
