BHUBANESWAR: Think twice before opening the doors of your house to a stranger. A woman in Baramunda under Khandagiri police limits had to pay the price for allowing two men, who claimed to be jewellery polishers, into her house and serving them water.A complaint in this regard was lodged by Ratna Manjari Singh, wife of Srikant Kumar Patra. Singh stated in her complaint that two bike-borne miscreants knocked the door the house and when their daughter opened the door, the two asked for her mother.
The two informed Singh that they were from Patna in Bihar and skilled in cleaning gold and silver ornaments. They also told her that they would polish the accessories free of cost. However, Singh declined the offer saying she did not have any jewellery. The miscreants, before leaving, asked for some water. When Singh returned with water, the miscreants had positioned themselves near the entrance door and as soon as she came they snatched her gold chain and fled away on motorcycle.
Police later called Singh to identify two youths who were nabbed from a petrol pump on December 6 for not paying money after refuelling their motorcycle. The number plate was covered with a cloth leading to suspicion. But, Singh told police that the youths were conversing in Hindi. “We have received the complaint and are trying to trace the two miscreants,” Khandagiri Police said.According to Commissionerate Police data, about 58 cases of daylight burglaries were reported in the Capital City in 2016 as compared to 29 in 2015.
