Federer, 36, is used to battling it out with fierce rival Rafael Nadal for honours at the back-end of tournaments.

But the Spaniard - for obvious reasons - doesn't fit the bill to be nominated for the Credit Suiss Swiss Sports Person of 2017 award.

Federer, who hails from Basel, managed a phenomenal comeback that included his 18th and 19th Grand Slam titles in 2018.

He then skipped the clay season but still finished the year ranked number two in the world.

Standing in his way in Sunday's ceremony are gymnastics champion Pablo Bragger and downhill skier Beat Feuz.

Roman Josi and Andy Schmid, who play international ice hockey and handball respectively, are also in the running as is Nino Schurter, who has won every title a mountain biker can win.

Federer tweeted on Saturday night: "Honored to be nominated for the @CreditSuisse Swiss Sports person of 2017."
