Jaipur: Relatives of a 40-year-old Rupesh Sharma donated his organs — heart, kidneys and liver after he was declared brain dead while undergoing treatment at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital on Saturday.

Sharma's organ saved life of four persons, who were fighting for life as they were suffering from different organ failures.

"His heart was flown to Delhi, while his liver was transplanted into a patient at a city's private hospital, while kidney transplant were performed at SMS Hospital," said Dr DS Meena, superintendent, SMS Hospital.

Liver was transported to a city's private hospital. SMS Hospital had a recipient, who belonged to Alwar. "We contacted the recipient for liver transplant, but he did not turn up. We made repeated calls on his phone number, which he had provided but it remained switched off. We cannot keep liver after harvesting it for long. Through proper channel and process, it was transplanted into a patient in a private hospital," said Dr Meena.

He said that hospital authorities had already informed Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Delhi to remain ready for assisting the SMS Hospital doctors in liver transplant. But, as the recipient did not turn up, the hospital officials requested ILBS doctors not to come to Jaipur.

However, Sharma's family took a brave decision by donating his organs. "Mere bhai ka dil kisi aur main toh dhadkega, India main kahin bhi (my brother's heart will continue beating in a person, anywhere in India)," said Rupesh's brother Durgesh Sharma.

Rupesh family was leading a happy life at their residence situated at Dhehar Ke Balaji area before he met with an accident on December 3. He is survived by his wife, daughter and a son.

"It was an unfortunate morning, when Rupesh left from home to Bassi on December 3 along with one of his relative. When they reached near Kanota, a car coming from other direction broke the barrier hitting Rupesh's car badly. Rupesh rushed to SMS Hospital immediately for treatment," said Durgesh.

The doctors at SMS Hospital provided him treatment but he did not regain consciousness. On December 7, the doctors declared him brain dead.

Mohan Foundation Jaipur Citizen Forum (MFJCF) provided counselling to Rupesh's family to encourage them to donate his organs to save other patients lives.
