Amritsar MC polls: Residents demand drive against ear-deafening pressure horns

Amritsar: Ear deafening noises produced by the pressure horns installed on the city vehicles is an issue that the residents of Amritsar plan to raise with the candidates contesting civic (MC) polls, which are all set to be held on December 17.

Resident committees of various wards, especially those close to highways or major roads, have started meeting the candidates to get assurances on initiating a drive to ban pressure horns completely. According to them, the ear-splitting sound of these horns causes noise pollution and is danger for two-wheeler drivers and cardiac patients.

"On Wednesday, we discussed the issue of pressure horns with the candidates of both the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal, who would be contesting the MC elections from our area," said Hari Kumar, a resident of Chand Avenue.

He said that the candidates had given an assurance of initiating a drive against the use of pressure and multi-toned horns.

Despite repeated warnings, trucks, buses and even school vans use pressure horns. "The deafening sound of these horns often gives us restless nights, and elderly persons and children are their worst sufferers," said Tanu Kaur, a resident of Rattan Singh Chowk.

A member of National Road Safety Council Kamaljeet Soi said that the sound of pressure horns could lead to fatal accidents, besides having a major effect on the hearing.

"What is more surprising is the fact that the traffic police are often seen penalising young boys and girls, however, they hardly stop or 'challan' any heavy vehicle for blowing pressure horn," said Sukhdeep Singh, a shopkeeper at the Railway Link road.

"Three-wheelers with pressure horns were hardly given any tickets by the traffic cops," Sikhdeep added.
