Tirupur: Yet another area in the city was equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on Friday to keep in check the rise in crimes.
This time, as many as 36 high quality cameras were installed at Thiruvika Nagar and LIC Colony on College road. This was done under the Third Eye project launched jointly by the Tirupur Exporters' Association and Sripuram trust. It would benefit around 400 houses in the locality.
City police commissioner P Nagarajan unveiled the CCTV cameras on Friday. With this, the city has around 1,450 CCTV cameras functioning in the public places.
In the second phase, another 14 cameras will be installed at the locality.
"It is the second spot to be covered after Sheriff Colony and Aranmanai Puthur, where 56 cameras were installed. We are making efforts to persuade residents to contribute and install the cameras for their protection," said Raja M Shanmugam, Tirupur Exporters' Association president.
"We want to bring all the 63 wards in the corporation limits under the CCTV camera surveillance. It will help to bring down crime rates in the city and this will in turn help attract more foreigners," Shanmugam said.
The city top cop lauded the initiative. "We are encouraging the initiative as it will be useful in crime detection. The cameras installed at Thiruvika Nagar and LIC colony are high-resolution ones and they can easily capture even the registration number of vehicles," Nagarajan said.
