‘A machine’ May saves Brexit and returns to visit dementia sufferers after all-night talks

THERESA May spent last night thrashing out details of her Brexit deal before jetting off to Brussels in the early hours - but she still found time to meet with dementia patients back in her UK constituency.

The Prime Minister is frequently referred to as the ‘Maybot’ over the past year as she has been mocked for her repetitive answers and robotic gestures during her general election campaign.

But today she proved she really is a machine after saving Brexit through all-night talks with Jean Claude Juncker before jetting back to the UK to visit dementia sufferers.

Senior advisors thrashed out initial details of a deal into the early hours of Friday morning, with Mrs May able to nab a quick two-hours shut eye after crunch talks with the DUP leader Arlene Foster.

She then set off from Downing Street at 3.30am this morning for a drive to RAF Northolt to take the short flight to Brussels, where she was greeted by the European Commission President.

After breakfast with David Davis and Mr Juncker, the deal was done and she made the quick hop back to the UK.

Her plane touched down in the UK by 9.30am as she headed straight for her Maidenhead constituency.

Mrs May’s spokesman said: “It was a long night.

“The text kept changing until it was in a place where everybody felt it was what we needed to achieve.”

After arriving in her constituency, she met dementia services users and carers at the "excellent" Alzheimer's Society.

The Prime Minister tweeted: “I visited the excellent @alzheimerssoc in my constituency this morning, meeting service users and their carers.

“I was pleased to become a #DementiaFriend, an initiative aiming to create a climate of kindness and understanding about dementia.”

Mrs May’s aides admitted work was relentless over the past 48 hours, with her spokesman saying: “The Prime Minister had a tough day yesterday.

"There was a lot of work to be done, a lot of conversations to be had. We’re pleased we’ve got to the place we are this morning.”

Downing Street and Department for Exiting the EU officials said incremental progress was made throughout the day on Thursday, but it was late into the evening when all sides agreed.

Mrs May made two personal calls to Ms Foster, one at 9pm and another at 11pm, to ensure her DUP colleagues - who prop up her minority Government - were in agreement.

Earlier in the evening she had also spoken to Leo Varadkar, the Irish Taoiseach, and Mr Juncker.
