GHAZIABAD: Unidentified men broke into a locked house in Vijay Nagar's Sector 9 on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday and decamped with cash and gold ornaments collectively worth Rs 21 lakh.

The victim, identified as Sandeep Yadav (35), a dairy owner, along with his family members had gone out to Tigri village in Gautam Budh Nagar to conduct last rites of his elder brother when the robbery took place.

Police suspect role of insiders in the crime, as a pistol worth several lakhs kept in one of the cupboards, was not touched. Yadav is a nephew of BJP councillor Sant Ram Yadav.

Two days back the marriage ceremony of victim's nephew, who lives across our house in Sector 9, had taken place and lots relatives had been residing in nearby houses.

"We had returned to our house from Bamheta village on Wednesday with the bride. A day later, we got a call from my elder brother's house in Tigri that he had fallen and needed to be admitted to a hospital. We took him to a private hospital in Ghaziabad where he was declared brought dead. We subsequently went back to Tigri village to conduct the last rites. We returned back on Friday morning only to find the lock on the main door broken and house robbed of jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh and Rs 6 lakh in cash," Yadav told TOI.

The entire house was ransacked, but only cash and jewellery were stolen. A licenced pistol was also kept alongside cash and jewellery, but robbers did not take it. Given the emergency scenario, we had not got time to lock cupboards," he added.

SHO (Vijay Nagar) Naresh Kumar Singh said, "An FIR has been filed and the matter is being investigated. A forensic team has been called to collect fingerprints. The accused, it seems, are known to the victim and we are working on the leads provided to us."
