BBC ‘gender sorts’ top kids cartoons after male bias claims

A girl engineer is to be the new star of BBC kids’ channel CBeebies.

Cartoon problem-solver Bitz is being seen as helping to ease the Beeb’s “gender imbalance”.

Bosses hope she will be as big a hit as old male favourites Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam.

Bob – whose catchphrase is “Can we fix it? Yes we can!’ – and Sam both switched channels to C5.

But diversity campaigners have still accused the BBC of a male bias.

CBeebies boss Kay Benbow said of Bitz and Bob, about a young girl and her brother: “She’s the problem solver.”

But viewers blasted the change.

One said: “Are we next going to have Top Gear and Grand Tour with an all-female team?”
