Corporator raises ‘bogus’ patient alarm at hospital

Pune: The civic body's health department on Friday sought a clarification from D Y Patil Dental College on its alleged use of facilities at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Yerawada even as the process for signing an agreement with the institute was on.

The health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) issued a notice to the college after corporator Ashwini Landge claimed that she spotted over 150 patients admitted to the hospital run by the civic body. The corporator said the patients told her that they were associated with the college.

Landge said, "During a routine visit to the hospital, we witnessed a significant number of patients in the third and fourth floors of the health hub. We sought their details from the medical officers at the hospital. But they could not provide us with the details. We then contacted senior officials in the civic body."

She added, "The patients said they had no ailment, but were asked to get admitted to the hospital. They also said they were from other states. It's a serious issue."

Rahul Gethe, director of Ajeenkya D Y Patil University, said no one from D Y Patil Dental College was admitted to the hospital. "Action will be initiated against those found at fault," he added.

Anjali Sabane, assistant medical officer of the PMC's health department, said, "After we came to know about the incident, a notice was sent to D Y Patil Dental College. We have sought a clarification from them in the next two days on why it was using the hospital before the agreement process was completed."

She added, "As per the agreement, D Y Patil Dental College will run various departments in the hospital. The college had been asked to fulfil the requirements for the agreement. We will also issue a notice to the civic body's medical officer concerned at the hospital, seeking clarification on the issue."

The Yerawada police said the corporator has submitted a complaint application about the admission of the patients whom she thought "bogus".

The Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Yerawada was constructed at about Rs 7 crore and inaugurated in March 2007. Barring the state-run Sassoon General Hospital, most public health hubs across the city are mostly underutilised because people are not confident enough of getting timely and proper care there.
