Jordan- We wont settle for less than Palestinian state with Jerusalem as capital, says Tarawneh

(MENAFN - Jordan News Agency) Amman, Dec. 8 (Petra) -- Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Atif Tarawneh on Friday renewed the legislature's rejection of the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and said the House doesn't want a reversal of the decision only, but also an international recognition of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Leading thousands of protesters in downtown Amman along with other lawmakers, Tarawneh said in a speech at the rally: "We all stand united against tyranny...and we challenge the forces of evil and hegemony and we warn of tampering with the fate of an entire nation".

He called on protesters to fight injustice and said Palestine is not something the U.S. can give to whoever it wants and Jerusalem will remain Palestine's capital. The U.S., he said, should back down on its decision. Addressing the protesters, Tarawneh said: "Today, we are required to stand shoulder-to-shoulder to stop this disregard of the Palestinian people's rights, which has gone so far by obliterating Jerusalem's identity through the U.S. recognition of the holy city as the capital of Israel." He added: "We would spare no efforts to support the Palestinians' steadfastness until their rights are restored." YK
