NEW DELHI: The Congress today demanded a Supreme Court-monitored CBI probe into the alleged multi-crore scam in the state-owned Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC), and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the issue.

Congress spokesperson Ajoy Kumar raised the demand for a probe after alleging a Rs 10,651.80-crore scam in the company's foreign exchange expenses from years 2006-07 to 2015-16.

He demanded answers from Modi, who was the Gujarat chief minister till 2014.

"The Congress party demands that there should be a CBI investigation monitored by a Supreme Court judge into the scam in the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation," he told reporters.

Kumar alleged that there was no accountability in the GSPC and expenses in foreign exchange to the tune of Rs 10,651.80 crore was made by GSPC which has not been shown in the profit and loss account of the company.

"This is the biggest scam and Prime Minister Modi's slogan of 'na khaoonga, na khaane doonga' (won't allow corruption) is a mere rhetoric and 'jumla'," he alleged.

"Should there not be a detailed investigation into the GSPC scam and should Narendra Modi not answer questions about the scam? Will prime minister Modi not answer the people of Gujarat and the country on this issue?" he asked.

The Congress leader also alleged that there was a nexus between the Narendra Modi-led state government with the corrupt, "who are rewarded with high posts after a scam".
