Margao: The Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) on Friday demanded dissolution of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) alleging a scam in the door-to-door collection of garbage that is outsourced to an agency.
Convenor of SCM, Savio Coutinho, alleged that the exercise being carried out by Bapu Environmental Social Service Organisation in six wards of Fatorda constituency is likely to cause a loss of over Rs 4 lakh per month to the civic body.
"As per the acceptance letter to the agency, the MMC has to be provided 45 workers for the job and each worker would be paid at the rate of Rs 500 per day i.e. Rs. 6,75,000 per month. However, not more than 30 workers are actually provided by the agency, thereby the council is likely to pay 15 ghost workers Rs 2,25,000 per month. The agency only pays the workers only Rs 9,000 per month (inclusive of ration and rent). This amounts to Rs 1,80,000 per month being paid in excess, to some middle man," Coutinho said.
