Mohali: Shiromani Akali Dal activists of the Mohali unit led by Derabassi MLA N K Sharma along with TPS Sidhu staged a protest at the Balongi barrier on Friday. The protesters blocked the National Highway number 21 forcing the interstate traffic movement to take diverted routes.
Raising slogans against the Congress government, Akali leaders sought cancellation of cases registered against the party leaders and action against Congress activists who had allegedly attacked SAD leaders. They announced that their protest would continue till their demands were met.
Following this, many vehicles, including buses, were stuck in traffic snarls. Meanwhile, traffic was diverted through various places from Phase VI towards industrial area phase V and VII to be connected to airport road to get through to Kharar.
"Congress workers have attacked SAD leaders. But police are not taking action. Our protest is against the atrocities of the Congress regime which will end in forthcoming MC elections," alleged Sharma. Sharma said they would not lift the dharna till action was taken against the Congress men.
To protest against the alleged attack on their party leaders by Congress workers at Mallanwala on Thursday near Ferozepur, SAD activists on Friday blocked traffic at various place across Punjab.
Sidhu, said, "We have been demanding the withdrawal of all false cases registered against party workers on Thursday at Mallanwala. The government must get cases registered against Congress leaders who had attacked Akalis and indulged in arson. We demand immediate suspension of Zira DSP and local SHO for allegedly colluding with Congress workers. We also demand countermanding of elections in Manawala and Makhu nagar panchayats and Baghapurana and Ghanaur municipalities."
Sidhu alleged, the ruling Congress is "spreading violence deliberately to thwart all prospective candidates from contesting the civic elections. The Amarinder Singh-government has lost faith in the electorate due to its non-performance. Hence, in order to capture the MC polls, it is encouraging party workers to use muscle power against political opponents," he said.
