PUNE: A 42-year-old man beat his 70-year-old mother to death after a quarrel when she refused to give him the over property documents of their house in Ganeshnagar in Erandawane.

The Alankar police have arrested the man. The murder development comes barely a day after an alcoholic and jobless diploma engineer murdered his parents after a fallout over money he needed to start a business.

Police said Anand Manohar Sapkal, the killer, is unmarried and lived with his mother, Aruna, in an independent two-storied house at Ota Vasahat in Ganeshnagar. His father had passed away a few years ago. Sapkal was reluctant to share the property with his two married sisters which was the cause of frequent quarrels with his mother.

Senior inspector Rekha Salunkhe said on Thursday that Sapkal came to the police station, barely a few metres away from his house, and informed them that his mother was lying motionless and he feared something amiss. "Our team found her unconscious and we sent her to a hospital where she was declared dead," Salunkhe said.

A postmortem report confirmed that the elderly woman had been beaten to death. A subsequent probe, led to the arrest of Sapkal, Salunkhe said.

An officer from the Alankar police station said, "Sapkal may have used his hands to beat his mother to death. We did not find any marks of any blunt injury on her body."

Dispute over property

Sapkal's mother had handed over their land in Ganeshnagar to a developer who constructed a building at the spot. He had given half the building comprising three, one-room kitchen apartments to the Sapkal family and kept the remaining. Sapkal and his mother lived on the ground floor and had rented out the remaining apartments. "The rent was their source of income," a resident of the locality, who did not wish to reveal his identity, said.

A probe revealed that the flats were registered in Aruna Sapkal's name. "She wanted to divide the property among her three children. However, Sapkal was against her decision and demanded that she give him the property documents," an officer from Alankar police said.

The mother and son would quarrel over it. When the fight escaleted on Thursday, Sapkal beat up his mother with his hands. She could not survive the blows and died. "When Sapkal found his mother not responding, he called for an ambulance and then came to the police station," the officer said.

Disturbed man, say residents

A resident of Ganeshnagar Ota Vasahat told TOI that Sapkal would abuse the other residents of the colony for no reason. "He was sent to the mental hospital in Yerawada several times but his mother would bring him back," one of them said, adding that he had been quarrelling with her for the past one week. "He would abuse her continuously," the resident said, adding that nobody realised he was assaulting her too.
