Surat: Around 75 lakh eligible voters would exercise their right to franchise on Saturday in the first phase of polling to elect representatives from 35 assembly seats in seven districts of south Gujarat, including Surat district.
Polling would begin at 8 am and continue up to 5 pm at the booths, including in Surat city and district that have 40 lakh voters, who will vote for election of member of legislative assemblies (MLAs) from 16 seats. There are 176 candidates of different parties in fray in Surat city and district where a large number of polling stations have been classified as critical by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Fifteen special teams of ECI would monitor election process in Surat. Surat city and district have 16 assembly constituencies namely Olpad, Mangrol, Mandvi, Kamrej, Surat East, Surat North, Varachha Road, Karanj, Limbayat, Udhna, Majura, Katargam, Surat West, Choryasi, Bardoli and Mahua.
In Navsari, for five assembly segments, there are 27 candidates in fray. In all, nearly 9.9 lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes in the district. Three candidates are in fray in Gandevi, whereas there are 12 candidates in Navsari seat. There are four assembly constituencies in Navsari district which are Navsari, Jalalpore, Gandevi and Vasda.
Valsad has five assembly constituencies. Around 1,167,718 voters would decide the fate of 37 candidates contesting from five assembly constituencies. The district has 1,355 polling booths in Valsad, Pardi, Dharampur, Kaprada and Umargam constituencies.
Bharuch district has more than 11 lakh voters who would be deciding the fate of candidates in five assembly constituencies of Jhagadia, Bharuch, Ankleshwar, Vagra and Jambusar. Dang and Tapi are tribal-dominated districts and they together have three assembly constituencies. TNN
