GURUGRAM: Residents of Sector 14 are miffed with the 400 hawkers who have mushroomed in the main market over the past one year.
RWAs complained that the illegal hawking zones occupy most of the area leading to altercation with permanent shopkeepers as well. The anger was renewed after an elderly woman was grievously injured after falling on road earlier this week as there was no space for walking on the pavement.
RWAs told TOI that over the past one-and-a-half years, hawkers have mostly quadrupled and more so because MCG has created a dedicated hawking zone in Sector 14 to accommodate hundreds of hawkers around the city.
"We were already reeling under this problem. There is nowhere to walk. All our footpaths and sidewalks are occupied by hawkers," said Dinesh Aggarwal, president, RWA, Sector 14.
"On Monday, a septuagenarian woman fell over because of the narrow walk-way left on the sidewalk after the hawkers set up shop. It was broad day light and everyone saw it. Ever since, lots of people are angry over the hawkers here."
Residents said that shopkeepers in the area routinely quarrel with hawkers. "The issue has worsened so much that you witness fighting everyday," Ramesh Choudhry, another resident said. "The shopkeepers are continuously snarling at hawkers who often park their carts in front of the shops."
MCG commissioner Umashankar did not respond to calls, despite repeated attempts made by TOI.
However, another civic official said that hawkers in Sector 14 are within the zone entirely dedicated for them.
But Aggarwal said there was a court hearing on December 8 on a case related to the same issue. "My lawyer will be going to Punjab and Haryana high court on December 8 where we have registered a case against these hawkers in July this year."
