NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi on Friday slammed the BJP for its "arrogance" and claimed that the saffron party released its manifesto for Gujarat assembly election only after the Congress raised questions.
"We raised questions about manifesto and BJP hastily prepared it behind closed doors. Congress asked for it so Arun Jaitley released it. Otherwise why do they need it when they think they're going to govern here for 100 years? Such is their arrogance," the Congress vice-president said at a campaign rally in Anand, Gujarat.
Earlier in the day, finance minister Arun Jaitley unveiled the BJP's poll manifesto a day before Gujarat votes in the first of the two-phase election.
Prior to this, Rahul had come down hard on the BJP for not presenting its poll agenda and charged that the saffron party had shown "unbelievable disrespect" to the people of the state by commiting this oversight.
"The BJP has shown unbelievable disrespect towards the people of Gujarat. Campaign is over and STILL no mention of a manifesto for the people, no vision and no ideas presented for Gujarat's future," Rahul said in a tweet on Thursday.
Sharpening his attack against PM Modi, Rahul alleged that the prime minister was talking about non-issues instead of addressing the matter of Gujarat's future.
"Modi ji used to say that the BJP will rule in Gujarat for the next hundred years. But he is not saying a single word about the future of Gujarat at his rallies," the Gandhi scion said at a public rally in Chhota Udaipur before BJP published its poll manifesto.
In contrast, the Congress had come out with a manifesto listed the demands of various sections of society as they want to form a government that focuses on the people of Gujarat, Rahul explained.
"People want to know what the BJP or Congress would do for them. While the BJP has not declared its manifesto, we held extensive dialogue with the people and prepared our manifesto accordingly," he added.
Hitting back at Rahul, Jaitley termed the Congress manifesto, released two days back, to be "constitutionally impossible" and "financially improbable if not impossible".
The BJP's 'Sankalp Patra 2017' was prepared keeping in mind the party's resolution to maintain and improve on the 10-per cent growth clocked by the state under the party's rule, Jaitley said.
Voting for 89 seats of Saurashtra and south Gujarat will be held tomorrow, while that for 93 seats of north and central Gujarat, including Chhota Udepur, wILL he held on December 14. Campaigning for the first phase ended yesterday.
