Brexit Minister ROASTED by Boulton over shock revelation UK is tied to EU for 8 YEARS

BREXIT Minister Steve Baker faced a brutal grilling over the latest breakthrough deal, which is set to Britain to the EU for a further eight years after Brexit.

Tory MP Steve Baker insisted Britain will “take back control of its laws” but said British courts can voluntarily refer matters to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) where there is “inadequate case law relating to citizens' rights”.

But the interview got heated when presenter Adam Boulton quizzed Mr Baker on the ECJ element to the  deal, which will be in place for eight years after Brexit.

Mr Baker said: “The crucial issue is whether a supreme court in another country can overrule our own legal system and we are bringing that to an end.

Bolton hit back and said: “Except we will appeal to that court and accept the courts' decisions so that’s the same thing.”

Mr Baker responded: “No, Adam - not at all. So it's voluntarily, narrow and time-limited.”

The Tory MP said the Brexit deal document explains the court of justice will be voluntary for courts who wish to establish a point of case law relating to citizens.

Mr Baker said: “It will only be for a time-limited period so that the withdrawal agreement is case law can be developed.

But Bolton insisted that an eight-year period under ECJ rules is a “very long time”.

Mr Baker claimed “some people” might have preferred a short period than eight years but that was the negotiated position. He said he is “satisfied” with the compromise.

Mr Bolton said: “But I’m not saying whether this is a good thing or a bad thing but all I’m trying to say is this is not a future relationship with Europe after Brexit anything like what you and your colleagues in the European research group wanted.”

European Commission President agreed on Friday that enough progress was made on key Brexit issues in order to move on to trade talks.

Negotiators have now published the full text of the agreement, which Mrs May said her DUP partners had agreed to back after "significant improvements" were made.
